Why Education Is Important For Facilitating Life’s Purpose

Human beings have long contemplated the true meaning and purpose of life, as the quest for purpose continues to be an individual journey of understanding, assessment, decision-making, and implementation. Regardless of the uniqueness of every individual, education has played a pivotal role in shaping our sense of purpose. Academia is an integral part of our life, where we initiate our education at institutions, long before we could develop the comprehension of ‘the purpose’ in our lives.

Education imbibes and establishes a value system within ourselves, which serves as our driving force that ultimately determines our purpose in life. But how does life purpose relate to educationally important attributes like motivation, feedback, institutional support, and emotional engagement, especially towards education aimed at highlighting the impact can students have? The academic environment that we are exposed to, helps to inculcate these values among us while enabling a sort of ‘give and take’ transaction of ideas, goals, preferences, and other intangible ideals. In this essay, the significance of education in shaping one’s purpose in life is contemplated.

A study compared college graduates with adults with a negligible college education on a variety of parameters, relating to the development of their life’s ‘purpose’ (Sumner, R. n.p.: n.p., 10 . 7 Oct. 2021.). ‘Purpose’ meant a consistent yet abstract will and determination to achieve something meaningful for ourselves, and, in a way that extends way beyond our individuality. The 4 parameters were: purpose pathway, purpose orientation, psychological agency, and well-being. The results revealed that the level and extent of education had no significant impact on the purpose ‘pathway’, the decisions, processes, and methods followed to fulfill that purpose. Yet, it had a remarkable impact on the ‘orientation’, the content of a person’s purpose, direction, and level. Thus, education predicts the purpose orientation and agency among us, as it is absolutely essential for realizing and achieving one’s life goals. Education enables growth, offers employment, inculcates values like cooperation, teamwork, and mutual understanding, while it expands our worldview and helps us navigate through our later stages of life. Thus, education shapes the way we perceive, transform, and develop our purpose in life.

Another study demonstrates the importance of having a purpose in life towards obtaining higher earnings and a larger net worth  (Hill et al. 2016) People from the age range of 25-33 had a weak negative correlation, where younger individuals with higher purpose had lower net-worth, 33-45-year-olds had no noticeable correlation, while those above the age of 42 had a consistently positive correlation that grew with rising age. While research clearly establishes the advantage of higher education in lifetime earnings. A study by Tamborini, C. R., Kim, C., & Sakamoto, A. (2015) concluded that multiple parameters displayed a positive correlation between higher education and overall lifetime earnings at different stages in life. Higher education almost always resulted in higher earnings. Beyond the scope of these two studies, there exists a universally accepted notion that a sense of purpose in life leads to better achievements in our individual careers. Extrapolating from this, a better education, and a sense of purpose in life, leads to higher income and thus points to the relevance, influence, and overlapping between one another.

Thus, it would be logical to conclude that these three factors: education, purpose, and earnings share a direct correlation. Education is crucial for enabling us on our journey to seek our life’s purpose and it also has a profound impact on the way we actualize our goals, the methods we use, and our overall level of satisfaction. Thus, this essay asserts reinstates and the notion that education is paramount in facilitating a purpose in life.
